While some people may benefit from the use of medication if their doctor feels that is best, many can conquer their anxiety and panic disorders without using medication.

If you suffer from chronic anxiety or unpleasant panic attacks you may be tempted to find quick relief through medications, however they are not always the best choice. Counseling

Counselors treat those with anxiety disorders and can help individuals with mild to moderate anxiety or panic attacks.  They one on one with a client and help them learn better coping skills which may include homework or exercises to do outside of the counseling session.

Therapists

Many therapists have training in anxiety disorders and can be very helpful for those with chronic anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia and depression. Their treatment plan may include talking about your past and what led up to your anxiety; including family and other relationships. You will be taught techniques for coping with stress and anxiety, including ways to stop panic attacks. Your anxiety won’t be cured in a few sessions, but working with a therapist for some time usually provides relief.
 
Psychologists

Psychologists are highly skilled and have more training than counselors and therapists, but are more expensive as well.  They usually delve more into the origins of your anxiety including your childhood, family history and current living situation. This may be a choice to consider if you have extreme anxiety or have been suffering for a long time.

Psychiatrists

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and the only treatment provider qualified to prescribe medication.   Most psychiatrists work for hospitals and with those who are seriously mentally ill, however they are often used as a resource by other mental health providers. You may be referred to a psychiatrist for an evaluation to see if medication may be a good option for you, but you do not need to go to a psychiatrist as a first resort for anxiety or panic attacks. 

Self-Help

Today you have many treatment options available for you to use in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Many people have been extremely successful and finding relief from anxiety, social phobias and panic attacks through the use of reputable self-help programs with a proven track record of success. If you do not want to go to a therapist or use medication, you may want to try self therapy for anxiety.
