Panic Attack
Symptoms
What panic attack symptoms should you look for to know if you are having a panic
attack?
Panic attacks can feel like other serious medical conditions and can be quite
frightening. Many people have rushed to the hospital thinking they are having a heart attack, only to find out
it was only anxiety. It's always a good idea to have a doctor check you to rule out serious medical
conditions and be sure a panic attack is actually what you are having.
Here are some typical panic attack symptom:
- racing heart, pounding in your chest
- feeling dizzy, space or an "unreal feeling"
- nausea or butterflies in your stomach
- shaky hands and/or legs
- intense fear or sense of dread with no apparent cause
- feeling like you are having a heart attack or you are going to
die
If you have panic attack symptoms like these and find them very
frightening, you may feel better knowing you are in good company.
Panic attacks and anxiety are extremely common and doctors see people everyday with these symptoms. Once you have
been cleared of any medical issues, you can feel better knowing that panic attacks, although extremely unpleasant,
are not dangerous and you will not die from one.
One of the characteristics of a panic attack is the feeling you are going to die.
These attacks come out of the blue with no outward threat or reason to feel intense fear. Most attack only last a
few minutes, but some can last for up to half and hour.
Some people start having panic attacks as children, yet many people have there
first attack as an adult; often following a stressful life event such as divorce or loss of a job. Once a person
has a panic attack they often become afraid they will have another. Since this attacks can happen anytime and
anywhere with no warning, sufferers feel a terrible lack of control. They don't know how to avoid these attacks and
can often avoid the place that the panic attack occurred.
This avoidance pattern can become extremely disruptive and will start to interfere
with your ability to function and enjoy your life. An extreme form of this anxiety avoidance is agoraphobia; an anxiety disorder where a person is actually afraid
to leave their home and can become homebound for years. No one should suffer this way because there is help and
panic disorders are very treatable!
Even though panic attacks are not life threatening, they can be very upsetting and
decrease your life. There is no reason you have to just suffer from anxiety and panic disorders. There is much you
can do to help yourself today.
