Different Types of Anxiety Disorders

While many people have heard of panic attacks, there are severaltypes of anxiety disorders image different types of anxiety disorders that affect many people.

Anxiety is a normal part of life and everyone experiences anxiety from time to time. It is normal to feel nervous before an important test, job interview, first date or social situations where you don’t know anyone.  This normal nervousness is quite different from the experience of those with an anxiety disorder.  Anxiety can be quite crippling and prevents many people from enjoying their lives and pursuing their dreams. Panic attacks can be so frightening; many have gone to the hospital emergency room fearing they were having a heart attack.

Here are some common types of anxiety disorders:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

This is an anxiety disorder in which no known cause for the anxiety exists.  A person who suffers from this type of anxiety disorder will often have anxiety attacks, triggered by an unknown source.  It can be something in their head that sets them off.  Doctors will give anti-depressant medication coupled with anti-anxiety medication so that it balances the chemicals in the brain and allows the person to function regularly.

Panic Disorder

Someone who suffers from panic disorder gets frequent anxiety attacks and often winds up in the ER of the hospital thinking that they are having a heart attack.  This can be a very disabling anxiety disorder and is the one that is the most pronounced.  Like general anxiety disorder, this has no known cause.  Again, it is treated with anti-anxiety medication as well as anti-depressants.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

This anxiety disorder results from a very traumatic experience or life threatening event. It is common in soldiers returning from war, victims of violent crime, abused women and children or anyone who has suffered through a great deal of for a long time.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder is different from being a little shy or nervous in some social situations. This is a social phobia which prevents a person from developing relationships and functioning fully at school or at work. These people have extreme anxiety or panic attacks in social situation and may avoid these situations in the future. Eventually this disorder becomes quite disabling and some people eventually do not leave home.

If you or someone you love suffers from any of these anxiety disorders, rest assured there is help! There is no shame in seeking help and many people have found relief from these different types of anxiety disorders and you can too.
